Understanding the Process: Grants, Loans and Scholarships

Many people are confused about the types of financial aid available to college students. Understanding the different types of aid should aid in the search for appropriate funds and support.

Grants and Loans

Grants and loans are generally available on the basis of financial need. These may be available through the college or university, or through government or charitable agencies. An applicant for this sort of aid will be required to provide financial information to document their need, but usually is not required to fill other academic requirements or compete for such funds. However, continued receipt of such aid may be contingent on keeping up with studies and maintaining a minimum class standing or grade point average.

Awards and Scholarships

Financial aid in the form of an award or scholarship is generally given to students who have qualified due to special talents or abilities that they have demonstrated. These may be awards for academic achievement, athletic ability, musical talent, or community leadership. Sometimes these awards also require a showing of financial need.

Scholarships for Dyslexia?

We are often asked if we know of scholarships for dyslexic students. Because scholarships are generally awarded in recognition of specific abilities or achievements, it is rare for such an award to be earmarked for students with learning problems. When such funds are available, they still often require a demonstration of achievement, or that students compete for the award by submitting essays or a documented record of achievement.

However, dyslexic students often do qualify for assistance based on financial need, including grants and loans; and may also be available for other assistance through government-sponsored vocational rehabilitation programs.
