10 Year Old Girl, Experiences Immediate and Radical Improvement

Lisa Abbott, mother of 10 Year Old Tessa in New Zealand, reported that her daughter had been through a series of remedial programs and extensive tutoring, but still struggled tremendously.

Prior to arranging the program, in late June, 2001, Lisa wrote:

"I am also fearful that Tessa will not respond to the program. Almost everything is negative to her. ... I never pressure her with her school work, but she becomes hysterical when she doesn't understand it....Tessa is not sure if she wants to do the program. She has done so many programs in the past that have only helped marginally. She is so frustrated she blows up everyday after school. Our other 3 children look at her in horror, and continually ask me what is wrong with her?"

Only a month later, on July 28, 2001, Lisa reported:

"WE DID IT!!! My daughter Tessa, aged 10, went through the Davis program last week. I must admit, I really didn't think I would notice that much change. I have to say (I know it has only been a day), I am in complete amazement. Here are the changes. I pray they will be long lasting.

1. No tears, frustration, or anger.

2. When I pick Tessa up from school, I find her reading out loud to a friend.

3. She tells me her day was alright (this is like telling me she had the best day of her entire life). There was NO screaming in the car.

4. Tessa Tells me she got 20 out of 20 on a spelling quiz. She hadn't even practised the words. Words like chocolate, pencil, etc. This is a child who spells gat for cat.

At this point I am in total AWE!!! I am praising the Lord.

5. In her handwriting class, she and 2 others were the only ones in the whole class to finish the assignment. (It was reccommended by the LD center that Tessa not attempt to do any writing.) I could go on and on about yesterday. I have never seen my child so happy and CONTENT. Isn't that all we want for our children? "

A day later, Lisa wrote:

"I must admit, after doing so many different programs, and watching my daughter ona downword spiral, I wondered if anything would help. Just seeing her smile these past few days, seeing her self-esteem and confidence increase has been worth every penny. It is as if a light switch has been turned on and she can finally see. All of a sudden school seems easy, even babyish (her words). I know it has only been two days, but usually the first few days back at school for Tessa is a nightmare.

Last night she read about 50 pages in a book (The Helen Keller Story). She was so absorbed in part of it, she started to cry. Can you imagine my delight when I realized she obviously wasn't struggling with her reading, but was actually absorbed in it?"

Only 12 hours later, Lisa reported:

"1. Tessa has finished her Helen Keller book. She got very sad when Helen died at the end. At the back of the book it showed the alphabet in Braille. Tessa has now learned half of it!

2. She has done 38 trigger words. WOW!!!

3. The big change so far is that she is keen. Keen to do her homework, excited to read, even practice spelling. They moved her up a level. On her first go she got 17 out of 20. Before, I couldn't even mention the word spelling."

Lisa's reports can be read on the [Davis Dyslexia Bulletin Board].
