7 Year Old Boy - Davis Reading Program for Young Learners

Justin is a 7 year old boy who lives in Singapore. He completed the [[Davis® Reading Program for Young Learners]] in July 2007 at http://www.dyslexia-in-singapore.com

Only one week after the program, Justin's mom wrote:

This is just to thank you for spending time helping us last week. To give you and the DDAI some feedback, Justin came back from his first day of school yesterday and reported he had spelling today.

In the evening after Chinese tuition, we did some koosh ball exercises and he learnt his spelling. Previous to this, learning each week's spelling list was a week-long, tortuous, horrid affair for both of us. We tried phonics, we tried breaking down the words into syllables etc, etc. We tried to note special triggers in the words. If we worked really hard, after a week of repetition and reminders, we'd get them right in time for the spelling test.

Yesterday evening, we sat down for about 20 - 25 minutes and using the Davis spell-reading method, finished the following list:

1. burrow
2. crocodile
3. octopus
4. eyrie
5. stable
6. sea creatures
7. scientist
8. coop
9. scaly
10. winter

After spell-reading, he wrote them out himself and was able to get them all correct. Even though he hesitated over some words the first time he penned them, he was able to correct himself and know when he was about to make a mistake. He spelled them all correctly the first time, just by spell-reading and whole word recognition.

This is amazing as it has never been so easy and painless for both of us. He could still remember the spelling today with no revision, half-asleep at 6:40 in the morning, while waiting for the school bus and happily wants me to test him again afterwards.
